Nederland with kids: a hand-carved carousel, a free mining museum, easy trails at Mud Lake, an outdoor rink and the library

Carousel rides and the puppet theater, storytimes, the toy library and museum passes, Chipeta Park, the skatepark, NedRINK's prices, the Mining Museum's last weekends, Mud Lake and Caribou Ranch, Wild Bear's days-off programs, Eldora's lessons and October's family events.

· Checked by [FIRST NAME], October 7, 2026

Nederland had 1,471 people at the 2020 Census, so the list is short and close together: a carousel, a library, a few Town parks, two county open spaces up the road, and Eldora for the winter. None of the Town’s park or Community Center pages lists a swimming pool or a splash pad. Here is what there is, with the rules, ages and prices each operator publishes as of October 2026.

The Carousel of Happiness is just off Colorado 119 in the Caribou Village Shopping Center at 20 Lakeview Drive. Rides are $3, babies under 9 months ride free, and a 10-ride punch card is $25. Anyone can come in to see the carousel and hear its story free of charge (visit page).

  • Upstairs is a puppet theater stocked with gently used animal puppets, and a window for watching the carousel’s old gears turn.
  • For sensitive ears staff can lend headphones or turn the music off. There are stationary benches, step stools and a wheelchair ramp, and the restrooms have diaper-changing stations.
  • No pets go inside. Service animals may come into the gift shop but stay off the ride.
  • Hours. The site’s hours box says 11 to 5 on Monday and Thursday and 10 to 5 Friday to Sunday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, with the last ride at 4:45. The visit page says it is generally open every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on weekends through fall, winter and early spring. In the off-season, call 303-258-3457 first.

The library

The Nederland Community Library at 200 Highway 72 North is open 10 to 7 Monday to Thursday, 10 to 5 Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 on Sunday (library).

  • Storytime is on Fridays at 10:15 and on Tuesdays with Wild Bear Nature Center; the first Friday of the month is Yoga Storytime (storytime). The library gives Tuesday’s time as 10:15 and Wild Bear as 10:30, and Wild Bear calls it free for “littles and their grownups”.
  • Costume Storytime is on Friday 30 October at 10:15 (page).
  • The After-School Makers Club for grades 1 to 5 runs on Thursdays from 3:40 to 5 pm, from 24 September to 19 November. A school bus brings children from Nederland Elementary, there is a snack, and pick-up is at the library at 5. Sharp tools and glue guns are used; sign up on the club page.
  • The toy library, puzzles and STEAM kits are listed on the Kids + Families page.
  • Experience passes cover days down the hill (passes). The Children’s Museum of Denver pass is up to four tickets, and the Denver Zoo pass admits up to four for a set date, with children 2 and under free. A Colorado State Parks backpack goes out for a week to adult cardholders.
  • A card is free to residents of the Nederland mountain area. Sign up in person with proof of mailing address and a photo ID; a parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18 (card page).

Parks, the skatepark and the rink

The Town’s parks list is the place to start.

  • Chipeta Park at 254 Lakeview Drive has play equipment, swings, a children’s pond, a shelter and picnic tables.
  • The Nathan Lazarus Skatepark at 155 East 1st Street is for skateboards and roller skates or blades only. It has a pool, a flow bowl, a cradle, a hoodie and a wall ride.
  • NedRINK at 500 Indian Peaks Drive is an outdoor rink, open December to February, with skate rentals, Learn to Skate lessons, hockey, curling and stick and puck (NedRINK). Sessions depend on the weather, and the schedule says to check for closures before you leave home. On the price list, an under-18 day pass is $8 for Nederland and Gilpin residents and $10 for visitors. Youth skate rental is $5, Learn to Skate is $15 a session, and children 3 and under skate free. A family season pass is $220 for residents and $240 for visitors.
  • The Community Center gym offers drop-in basketball, pickleball and kids’ kung fu, and the studio hosts children’s dance classes (Fitness Place). A drop-in visit is $3 for children 12 and under and $5 over 12. A family membership, two adults and their children through high school, is $75 a month (fees).

The Mining Museum

The Nederland Mining Museum at 200 North Bridge Street is free. It has trams, ore carts, engines and a mineral display indoors and out, and it is open Friday to Sunday from 11 to 5, June 1 through October 31 (Boulder County). That makes Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October the last days of this season. On Sunday 18 October the county runs gold panning there for children 5 and older and adults, in three half-hour sessions at noon, 12:45 and 1:30; register for one.

Easy trails

Mud Lake Open Space, which the Town lists as “Excellent for Children and Families”, has five easy trails of 0.7 to 1.3 miles, a restroom, picnic tables and a 50-person shelter you can reserve (county page). Dogs must be leashed, bikes stay on designated trails, ice skating is allowed and swimming is not. The county publishes a Nature Detectives Mystery Guide, in English and Spanish, and lists an audio hiking app made by the Boulder Watershed Collective.

Caribou Ranch, next door, has the 1.2-mile DeLonde Trail (easy), the 1.8-mile Blue Bird Loop (moderate) and the buildings of the old Blue Bird Mine. No pets or bikes are allowed. It is closed every year from April 1 through June 30 for spring migratory birds and elk calving (county page).

Brainard Lake, west of Ward, closes its summer gate in about mid-October. In winter you park at the Gateway Trailhead for the ski and snowshoe trails (Forest Service).

Wild Bear: days off and night hikes

Wild Bear Nature Center runs PEAK Days Off on most Boulder Valley school days off, from 8 am to 4 pm, outdoors at Mud Lake and around town, for $90 a day. Scholarships are available, and Wild Bear accepts state childcare assistance (CCCAP). The details give the ages as 6 to 12, though the page’s heading says 6 to 13; five-year-olds can join from January 2027. Pre-registration is required. Coming dates are 12 and 13 October, 11 November, 23 to 25 November and 21 to 23 December.

Owl Moon is a naturalist-led night hike at Mud Lake on Saturday 24 October from 6:30 to 8 pm, with registration online (event page). Another is listed for 21 November.

Eldora in winter

Eldora’s private and group ski and snowboard lessons, and its 90-minute Nordic group lessons, are for ages 4 and up. A helmet is required in every ski or snowboard lesson (lessons). Everything is sold online, with no sales at the mountain, and day tickets usually go on sale in October. The resort says its multi-week kids’ programs are back this season. A family bundle takes up to 15 percent off season passes for three to six family members.

Fishing

The Town lists fishing at Barker Meadows Reservoir, off East Street and Boulder Canyon Drive, which also has parking and picnic tables. Mud Lake allows fishing but is not stocked, so the county says a catch is unlikely. In Colorado, anyone 15 or under fishes free (Colorado Parks and Wildlife).

The calendar

  • October: a Winnie the Pooh birthday party at the library on the 16th, gold panning on the 18th and Día de los Muertos at the library on the 21st. Owl Moon is on the 24th. Very Nice Brewing’s pumpkin-carving party on the 30th welcomes families; bring a pumpkin. Halloween at The Vault on the 31st has trick-or-treating at the shops through the day, and the Carousel says it will be open late that night.
  • Winter: NedRINK opens in December, weather permitting, and Wild Bear runs Thanksgiving and winter-break days. The Town’s community events include the Holiday Mountain Market, a craft fair that closes out the year, with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
  • Summer: the same list has the Farmer’s Market every other Sunday from May to October and the Carousel’s summer circus at Chipeta Park.
